Conferences and Training in Peru
Updated 31 March 2009
Teachers in Peru enjoy going to training events as they can learn about the latest techniques as well as meet other teachers. There are plenty of events to go to and you should try to go to a couple of a year. Although most of them are in Lima, there are a couple in the provinces.
Many teachers are also part of professional affiliations. These may offer newsletters or discounts to training sessions. They will also tell you about upcoming events. Try looking at the following for more information. Peru Teacher Network, Asociacion Peruana de Profesores de Ingles, The British Council’s ELTeCS, Sociedad de Profesores de Ingles del Peru, Perú-TESOL , Asociacion Nacional de Profesores de Idiomas (ANPI) and The British Council’s ELTeCS yahoo group.
There are places that offer training sessions throughout the year. Some of these are Universidad de Cesar Vallejo, APPI, Macmillan, Longman, Británico, and Camelot. The best thing to do is check on their websites and see when their next event is.
Training and Professional Affiliations
If you are in Lima, there are many congresses and conferences for you to attend. If you are in the provinces, there are opportunities to go to conferences, just not as many as in Lima. You could also attend short courses in Lima offered by Camelot Training Centre or Británico.
Peruvians stress training sessions, so your school may offer these free to their employees or insist that you attend their training sessions. If not, try to attend a conference, as it allows you to do some networking. Try to have a section on your CV that lists a few of the recent conferences that you have attended. You can read more about training sessions in the article, Conferences and Training in Peru. Information about the latest training information can be found at Peru Job Bulletin. In addition, there are quite a number of professional affiliations that you can join. Some offer discounts for conferences and others publish newsletters.
There are plenty of one month training courses out there, though not every institute will require one. Look at Is a TEFL Cert Necessary? for more info. Make sure the course has at least 120 teaching hours and 6 hours of teaching students. Your library is a good place to start researching about TEFLing. In addition, you can find plenty of resources online, such as The Peace Corps Guide . You could also try TEFL Boot Camp and more articles, tips and tricks can be found at TEFL Tips.
