Visas
Ecuador is cracking down on those who overstay their tourist visa, it's only 90 days, then you have to leave for 90 days. If you're offered a job in Ecuador, be sure to ask if you will be getting a legal visa (usually a work visa or cultural exchange visa). Also, make sure that you get this visa BEFORE you enter Ecuador, or else you run the risk of being illegal.

Be aware that generally Latin American institutes do not get teachers visa. That doesn't mean that it's impossible, however, if working legally is important to you, be sure to ask your employer about visas. If they promise to get you a work visa, but tell you to enter on a tourist visa, be aware that they may not end up getting you a work visa at all. Primary and secondary schools, as well as universities seem more willing to get visas than language institutes.

If they can't, you could always work on a tourist visa. If you go that route, remember it is illegal, however, it can be done. You should find out about overstaying your visa and border hopping. Some countries, such as Mexico are easy to get visas for, others like Ecuador and Panama are difficult and you can run into trouble if you overstay your visa. Some countries like Peru and Costa Rica have many teachers that work under the table and just border hop.

  2. Have you heard anything (good or bad) about the experience of teachers who have gone to teach at CEC-EPN?

  3. No, sorry, but you could try asking at Dave's ESL Cafe.

  4. Stay Away from teaching at CEC-EPN, they pay late, very very, Late! It is only top down management. Ideas are not accepted nor implemented by the administration. The Admnistration is narcissictic. You teach more grammar than the students can learn. You are only just teaching for the 4 tests. Students are spoon fed. Stay Away! You are better off going somewhere else where you will be better treated and make more money! Stay Away, you are paid late, very late, remember that!

  5. Hey, thanks for the informative post! I am just wondering - do schools in Ecuador generally hire people in advance, or do teachers travel to Ecuador first? I am currently teaching in China, and want to start teaching in Ecuador around September.

    1. Most people just show up. But it might be worth it to email and try to apply that way.
